Oppose the Gun Lobby – A Speech

Those of you who know me know that I have spent most of the last two years of my life doing everything I can to keep guns out of public hospitals and college campuses in the state of Kansas by working to stop campus carry from going into effect on July 1, 2017.

The gun lobby—the National Rifle Association, or the NRA, and allied state groups—pushes legislation in this country that is inherently racist, sexist, and only serves to increase profits for gun manufacturers and legalize murder. And they are good at it.

They push for things like campus carry at colleges and universities—knowing full well that it will make classroom discussions of race, gender, class and religion nearly impossible.
They push for things like making carrying a gun a protected class—like race or gender identity—so that a private business cannot legally ask someone to leave because they carry a gun into a store—making a gun—an object someone owns—a fundamental part of a person’s legal identity.

They fight against laws that keep guns out of the hands of convicted domestic abusers—even ones that have previously shot their partners.

They work to abolish permit and training requirements and oppose background checks for gun sales.

They push for things like Stand Your Ground—making it legal to kill someone if you can prove you FELT threatened by them regardless of any actual threat.

And in Kansas, they actually made it so that public universities, hospitals and libraries are legally prohibited from commenting on gun laws that affect their daily operations.

All of these laws together work to create a system in which a George Zimmerman can not only have unfettered access to firearms, carry those guns anywhere he wants (including schools, daycare centers, mental health facilities, the grocery store, you name it), murder Trayvon Martin in cold blood and not be breaking the law at all.

Let me repeat: they are legalizing murder.

They claim these laws are to increase your ability to defend yourself, but I ask you to consider. . . Who are these gun laws protecting? And who are they putting at more risk?
Who will the police see as a threat if they carry a gun? And who will the police see as one of them?

I can almost guarantee they won’t see the neo-Nazis putting up racist flyers at KU as a threat. And let’s be real—we all know what happens when a black man in Minnesota expresses his “legal right” to carry a gun.

The gun lobby’s profits spike every time there is a mass shooting. They are not interested in preventing death. They are capitalizing on it.

The gun lobby knows the laws they push result in the literal DEATHS of people of color, women, trans and non-binary people, indigenous folks, Muslims, and anyone they see as a threat to the white supremacist capitalist patriarchy.
This is why it is imperative stop campus carry in Kansas and to stop these laws that the gun lobby is pushing.

Fail Campus Carry.
Oppose the Gun Lobby.
Lives depend on it.
